The North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans is excited to present our first Lunch and Learn Webinar of the year entitled Why Retirees Should Oppose the Debt Commission

The North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans is excited to present our first Lunch and Learn Webinar of the year,  Why Retirees Should Oppose the Debt Commission. The State primary may be over but retirees and older Americans will need to quickly shift their focus back towards preventing Congress   from once again attacking Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.

Congress will return from their Presidents’ Day recess and it is expected they will quickly vote on H.R. 5779, the Fiscal Commission Act, which was passed in the House Budget committee in January.  This bill is a new bite at the apple by House Republicans to make cuts to Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare – but how is it different this time?

H.R. 5779 and its companion bill in the Senate, S. 3262, the Fiscal Stability Act,call for a “Fiscal Commission” to be created.  This “Fiscal Commission” would be made up of a 16 person body that would make recommendations on how to balance the federal budget. The Commissionwould not be democratically elected, overseen or transparent in how it operates. .  These 12 congressional members and their 4 non-elected “experts” would  most certainly recommend  cuts to Social Security and other vital programs for retirees and older Americans. Those recommendations to Congress  would require an immediate up and down vote, with no chance for debate or amendments.

The North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans calls on its members to oppose this undemocratic legislation, that purports to be about fiscal responsibility but is just another trick to strip away the benefits that so many retirees and older Americans earned and contributed to  to throughout their careers.  NCARA strongly encourages its members, as well as their friends and allies, to attend our webinar on March 14th at 12PM to learn more about the Debt Commission.  NCARA  also urges our members to start calling our representatives  now, and let them know: “No to the Debt Commission and cuts.”
